Embassy Yerevan Warden Message 2
American Citizens are reminded of the hazards of travel by road in certain areas of the Republic of Armenia (RA). American Citizens are advised not to travel on the Ijevan-Novemberyan Highway between the towns of Kirants and Baghanis/Voskevan. The U.S. Embassy has designated this portion of the road off-limits to all U.S. government personnel because it lies too close to the cease fire line between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces, a line which has seen numerous cease fire violations over the years.
American Citizens are warned of the travel hazards when traveling outside the major cities of Armenia. Travel at night is not recommended, and winter travel can be extremely hazardous in mountain areas and higher elevations. With the exception of a few major arteries, primary roads are frequently in poor repair, with sporadic stretches of missing pavement and large potholes. Some roads shown as primary roads on maps are unpaved and can narrow to one lane in width, while some newer road connections have not yet been marked on recently produced maps. Secondary roads are normally in poor condition and are often unpaved and washed out in places. Street and road signs are poor to nonexistent.
This notice formalizes our long-standing recommendation to avoid the aforementioned area, as mentioned in the Consular Information Sheet for Armenia. The Consular Information Sheet can be found at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1765.html.
